How to optimise your Wi-Fi connection

Did you know?

Distance

The further away you are from your router, the weaker the Wi-Fi signal and slower connection you will experience on your device.

Obstruction

If you place your router in an enclosed area or near reflective/metallic surface, this can reduce your Wi-Fi coverage.

Did you know?

Interference

If you place your router near electrical appliances that generates electromagnetic interference, this can affect your Wi-Fi performance.

Heat

If you stack your broadband equipment, this may result in overheating. When the router overheats, it becomes less efficient.

Choose the right Wi-Fi frequency

Your TM Dual-band router is equipped with 2 Wi-Fi frequencies, 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Depending on your situation, it is good for you to know which Wi-Fi frequency you should be on to fully optimise your office internet.

A Wi-Fi frequency of 5GHz is best when you are near to your router and 2.4GHz is best for when you are far from your router.

Ensure your device has the latest Wi-Fi technology

An advanced Wi-Fi technology ensures that you have a more stable download and upload speed between you and your internet connection.

How to check? Click Window > Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapter, you will be able to see your Wi-Fi technology details.

Note: different laptop/model/brand/technology shows different type of Wi-Fi technology details.

1x1 vs. 2x2 antenna

A 1x1 antenna indicates that the device support Single Input Single Output (SISO). The device transmit and receive data over a single pair antenna.

A 2x2 antenna indicates that the device support Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), which means that it has the capability to support higher Wi-Fi speed since both pairs of antenna can transmit and receive data simultaneously.

Newer laptops and smartphones in the market are already equipped with a 2x2 antenna. However, the older generations as well as lower-end devices might still come with 1x1 antenna.

How to optimise your wired connection

Check your ethernet cable

An ethernet cable is the cable you use to connect your router and computer.
It carries the broadband signals between your modem, router, computer and other wired internet-capable devices. The label can be found along the body of the ethernet cable.

Speed up to 100Mbps
Category 5e
Speed up to 1Gbps
Category 6

Get a good ethernet card

Ensure that your device(s) is equipped with a Gigabit Ethernet Card for optimal connection.

How to check? Click Window > Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapter, you will be able to see your ethernet card details.

Note: different laptop/model/brand/technology shows different type of ethernet card.
